About Coaching

Become a Coach

Skilled and dedicated coaches are the most important aspect of Nevada South Interscholastic Cycling League mountain bike teams.  A Nevada South League coach puts the safety and overall well-being of their student-athletes as the first priority.  NICA-licensed coaches are role models and teachers who are open to learning the best practices of youth mountain bike coaching and actively working to hone their leadership skills.

“I THOUGHT I WAS DOING THIS ALL FOR THE KIDS, BUT IT TURNED OUT I BENEFITED PERHAPS MORE THAN THE KIDS, WITH REGULAR PRACTICES AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES.”

Many coaches echo the above sentiment, and they quickly learn that volunteer coaching a NICA team can be a lot of work yet perhaps one of the most rewarding experiences of their lifetime. Many coaches report improved personal well-being and fitness after just one season.

How do I become a NICA Coach?

NO PRIOR COACHING EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! The Nevada South Interscholastic Cycling League will provide all the NICA risk management and best practice training you’ll need to jump right in and start coaching a team.  Seminars called Leaders’ Summits and Ride Leader Training are held throughout the year, including online webinars and annual retreats.

How do I get started?

All NICA coaches start with NICA License Level 1 and take it one step at a time throughout the year as opportunities arise to complete additional requirements. The minimum requirement to ride with/coach students is NICA License Level 1 as per NICA “Safe Kids Policy”.

STEP 1: Check out NICA’s Coach Licensing Program for NEW and RETURNING coaches

STEP 2: Sign-up for an Nevada South League Coach Education event to obtain your NICA Coach license

STEP 3: Join an existing team or start a new team

Have you been a NICA Coach for two or more seasons?

The NSICL offers reimbursement for all Coach Licensing Fees (except background checks) for Coaches that have completed the necessary training to achieve their Level 1, 2, or 3 Certification.

How does it work?

  1. Each coach registering this season will pay all fees as normal.
  2. After completion of your licensing, please submit the “Coach Reimbursement Request Form“.
  3. There are three options, you can either:
    A. Request a reimbursement.
    B. Request store credit in the amount of $25 that can be use towards student-athlete fees for the season.
    C. Or, you can donate the $25 back to the league (it’s tax deductible)

Just a small way to say “Thank You” for all you do to #getmorekidsonbikes!
